Are you aware of the potential need for car hire excess insurance? For many people who regularly rent/hire a car this is a form of insurance that is often overlooked however a good friend of mine has recently been involved in an incident that has highlighted just how important it can be.
My friend's name is Paul. He is a decent, successful and well educated individual and the reason why I mention these three characteristics is due to the fact that I wanted to make it clear that the kind of honest mistake that Paul has made could basically happen to anyone.
Paul decided to hire a car as he had a wedding to attend in the South West region of London. His own car would not have been large enough to accommodate all of the people who were going to be travelling with him. This renting of a car is not a regular occurrence for Paul or his family therefore he was not that aware of the potential pitfalls that could/can happen.
During the journey to South West London to attend the wedding in question, Paul, along with the hired car, were involved in what turned out to be a minor crash. Despite the fact that the crash was seen as minor there was quite extensive damage to the hire car.
Much to the annoyance of Paul he was later informed that he would have to pay the first £1000 of the repair bill as way of the excess. This came as some what of a shock to Paul who had also not taken out any form of car hire excess insurance - if he had this £1000 bill would have been covered of course.
Paul has certainly learnt from this very costly error and he will be ensuring that he takes out this form of insurance the next time he hires a car.
